DLAT Rating: 10/10 (Darling Look At This!)

Yes, my wife and I rarely rate the chinaware, particularly when it has been hand crafted, as 10 out of 10 but this trio is one of the exceptions!

Another of my wife's stunning "show ponies" which she collected in her younger days for functions such as High Tea with her friends. A very eye grabbing colouring has been used by Sampson Smith, in fact they produced a wide range of equally stunning trio's back in their day.

Fantastic colours which always "lift" the feelings of the beholder!

My wife called these Buttercup Yellow Rose teasets (she had a couple of these trio's, once) but that is not the official the name of the design, only the teacup has the pattern number (3158) hand written in Gold on the underside and she has never been able to find out the "real name" for these.

SAMPSON SMITH LTD- Teacup, Saucer & Side Plate Trio

Made in Longton, Stoke-On-Trent England

Era 1945 ~ 1963 (this relates to the styling of the teaset and backstamp)

Circa late 1950's ~ early 1960's (this is according to my wife, she was told this when she acquired them ... that they were produced in the "dying days" of the pottery, Sampson Smith - the company had been in business since 1846 but by the 1960's the company was under the control of Colclough and a few years later, the bone china production was closed down.

Trade name: OLD ROYAL

Fine bone china, very light and delicate.

Translucent china, meaning that when held to the light, you can see easily see the shadow of your fingers through the china

Hybrid Transferware//Hand decorated (examined very closely, I can see "dot" and brush stroke decorations have been used to create the decorations) although no piece has the "old school" artist's ID markings.

Pattern name: unknown name but the teacup (only) does have the number 3158 hand applied in Gold.

Base china is a bright White with the stunning Yellow wash applied INSIDE the teacup, top of the saucer and side plate.

The decoration consists of large Red rose blooms with foliage.

Gold gilding has been applied INSIDE the top rim of the teacup, the central area, the lower base area and around the foot. The small "Queen Anne" style handle has gilding applied to both sides and the back. The saucer and side plate have double ringed Gold gilding applied to the rim area only, no gilding in the centre.

Shape of the teacup is much broader than a "standard" teacup, without scalloping to the rims - I would describe the rims as having "pinches" spaced around the rim and in fact the saucer and side plate have this same shaping of the rims.

BACKSTAMP PHOTOGRAPH (this backstamp corresponds to the 1945 ~ 1963 period)

TEACUP

DIMENSIONS:

TEACUP: 102mm mouth x 65mm height

SAUCER:148mm diameter

SIDE PLATE: 153mm diameter

Notice that the side plate is only just slightly larger than the saucer.

COSMETIC CONDITION:

This first section of the condition report is universal to all three pieces, any difference or flaws are noted below this section

NO cracks

NO crazing observed (wet & dry tested)

NO fleabites observed to either the saucer or the side plate

NO discolouration observed to any area of the Buttercup Yellow wash or the decorations.

NO wear or damage observed to any of the decorations, the colours are "soft" but the contrast with the Yellow is a brilliant choice of colour artistry.

The Gold gilding is in superb condition, no handling wear noticed on any of the usual areas such as the teacup handle, rim (Oh those corrosive lips!) and the edge rims of either the saucer or side plate.

There are no further comments specific to any of the three pieces
