DLAT Rating: 8.5/10 (Darling Look At This!)

Very traditional pattern from this period with the visually appealing gentle touch of applying a pale Blue wash over the bright White china base, this design is actually very similar to THESE with the Baby Pink wash.

COLCLOUGH (LONGTON) - Teacup, Saucer & Side Plate Trio

Made in Longton, Staffordshire England

Circa 1945 ~ 1948

Trade name: COLCLOUGH

Fine bone china, very light when held in the hand.

Translucent china, meaning that when held to the light, you can see the shadow of your fingers through the chinaware

Hybrid Transferware//Hand decorated (although only the teacup has a clearly visible artists mark, all pieces have gilder's marks)

Pattern name: unknown name and no intelligible numbers near any of the backstamps.

Base china has a pale Blue wash applied to 80% of the teacup external area (none inside) and the saucer, side plate have a wide band of the pale Blue wash, leaving the central area bright White.

Traditional Pink~Red rose blooms with foliage.

Gold gilding has been applied INSIDE the teacup (just below the top rim), around the top lightly scalloped rim, down both sides and back of the teacup handle and around the base of the teacup. The saucer and side plate has Gold gilding to the scalloped rim and surrounding the central area.

Based on the backstamp, this duo teaset would have left the works just after WWII, during the period 1945 ~ 1948. The Gold gilder has left their "mark' on the underside of all pieces but only the teacup has a decorator's marking. To be absolutely sure, I have examined the decoration very closely and can easily see the solid brush strokes but also 'dot painting' is used extensively, almost as though the decoration is partially transferware along with some "human touches" added.

Pretty traditional shaped pieces with the exception of the side plate which is something like a square plate with rounded corners.

COSMETIC CONDITION:

This first section of the condition report is universal to all three pieces, any difference or flaws are noted below this section

CLEAN

NO cracks

NO crazing observed (wet & dry tested)

NO discolouration observed to any area of the pale Blue wash or pure White base colouring.

NO wear or damage observed to any of the decorations, colours remain soft yet vibrant, gentle and yet 'fresh' looking (no wilted flowers here!)

The Gold gilding needs individual mention ...

Teacup ... superb condition, no handling wear noticed on any of the gilding, not even the handle or top rim.

Saucer ... rim gilding is in superb condition but the central Gold ring has just ever so slightly had some handling wear. If I was to grade this gilding condition, 9.5/10 ... it is not bad by any means but just the tiniest signs of wear to the gilding is apparent

Side Plate ... very similar gilding condition to the saucer with a superb outer scalloped rim decoration but the centre shows some very light handling wear, just a little more gilding wear (in the centre) than the saucer. I would still rate this gilding at 8.5/10 ... not terribly worn but noticeable none-the-less.

While I am describing the side plate, I do also notice one small non-discoloured fleabite on the underside.

There are no further comments specific to any of the three pieces
