BACKGROUND:

PYE were originally a British company, their products were aimed at the professional broadcast market and they were a well established "name" in that industry until around the mid 1980's when the company was "divested" with Philips picking up a number of their products but for the consumer, products were then produced in the PYE "name only", being manufactured in Taiwan i.e made to a consumer "price point" ... I have even seen folks offering this post 1980's equipment as being in the "Pro" class, if you believe that, I have a harbour bridge for sale!

HERE is a great wealth of information about PYE UK, the birth of the company and their progression through the years, with a number of interesting articles and photographs.

This large diameter knob is NOT complete, this knob reminds me of that old biblical expression ("a whitewashed tomb"), meaning that on the outside it looks just great, impressive in fact ... but take a look inside and Oh Dear! she is nothing but an empty shell (I have met women like that too!)

I hear you thinking ... "My man ... why do you bother to "part out" such components"?

I am very much "into" sustainability, a manufactured component (no matter how small) represents an appreciable amount of embedded energy and in fact the creation of Aluminium items is one of the highest users of energy and to waste that embedded energy is a very bad thing, even worse is to bury it in landfill and subsequently poison our environment!

What is embedded energy?

Embedded energy is a measurement of the total energy that was used to create a component, a module or a complete piece of equipment originally and should include all processes used in the manufacture of the item, from obtaining the raw materials, processing them, making the product and then shipping to another manufacturer in the "chain" or being supplied directly to stores as a finished product for retail sale.

UNKNOWN MANUFACTURER - Large Aluminium Knob (Incomplete)

Country of origin (most likely): Taiwan

As extracted from a PYE ST600 Tuner, unfortunately not everything could be salvaged! Please read on ...

Material: 100% Aluminium (this is not your el-cheapo fake metal coated plastic)

Measures: Ø 39.5mm (1.5") x 22mm (0.85") Height

The Aluminium is 0.85mm thickness (on the sides at least)

The measured INSIDE diameter is 36.75mm, this is the size of insert needed to fit inside the "shell" properly.

Look at "her" from the sides and looking down onto the top and this is one very nice looking knob ... alas, flip her over and inside there is NOTHING! You see these knobs originally had a plastic or nylon insert with a centre hole for the control shaft - this insert was glued in place originally.

When I extracted this knob on the "operating table" (workbench), I discovered that the insert was badly cracked and pretty well useless for it's intended purpose but Oh my! what a lovely piece of Aluminium, so I saved it.

I am hoping that someone already has a similar knob on their equipment but it is damaged or badly marked, this "outer shell" could then come to the rescue.

COSMETIC CONDITION:

Clean

NO dents topside or around the sides

Nice bright shiny polished Aluminium which is clear of any discolouration or marks.

NO scratch marks to the top or sides

This Aluminium knob outer shell is now within a sealed, clear plastic packet, waiting to be useful once again!
