BACKGROUND
A nice example of 1950's domestic kitchen Australiana, and it still works great! These were well constructed using all metal for the scales and known to be very durable in the "harsh" kitchen environment.
Originally these were supplied with a colourful top plastic or celluloid bowl to hold the content being weighed but this has long gone unfortunately. Only the scales, which readily accepts "other" top bowls, will be provided (as pictured)
PERSINWARE (Wells Persin P/L) - Domestic Weighing Scales
Made in Australia
Circa 1950's (based on the early "face" shape primarily)
Imperial measurement only (Pounds & Ounces)
Maximum 14 pounds (full scale)
16 Ounce sub markers per Pound measured
Base is metal steel (ferrous)
Cream~White top coating (not enamelled, it appears to be a coating of paint - reacts with Iso alcohol so be careful cleaning!)
Rear spindle zero adjustment to allow for the weight of different top bowls
The original top bowl was made from an early type of plastic (celluloid), usually in bright colours, but our bowl has long since gone to see it's maker! Not supplied.
The top bowl support base is removeable (single screw)
Three feet base support provide a stability to the scales on a flat surface
NO front scale protection, so care is needed when handling and cleaning
DIMENSIONS:
210mm (8.25") height x 160mm wide
Easy to read 140mm (5.5") diameter scale face
Weight: 800g (with no bowl on the top)
COSMETIC CONDITION:
USED so of course there are signs of handling from 75+ years of use!
CLEAN
Sterilised
Front face patches with show some wear to the top Cream-White coating but out of 10 I would give these scales a hearty 8, allowing for age and frequent handling.
Curious thing ... the wear you can see on the front surround (two areas) is NOT rust but wearing of the White top coating and underneath you can see a Copper-like colour but the metal is ferrous (I checked with a magnet) meaning although it looks like Copper, it is in fact Iron or steel.
The Black scale pointer is not bent.
NO dents or physical damage to the main body or the front face.
TESTING:
I have checked the operation of the scales and the zero set adjustment knob at the rear, everything seems to be working nice and smoothly, right to full scale measurement. Checked it against electronic scales and it seems to still be reasonably accurate, not bad after all this time.
Persinware scales have become renown over time for their long term durability and these scales meet that expectation.
NOTE: When shipping, I will remove the top bowl support plate and carefully pack with the main scale (along with the bolt of course) with special attention paid to the pointer - the complete unit will be very carefully packed to ensure it makes the trip safely to it's new home.
