BACKGROUND ...
Oh my, some more golden oldies!
Fortunately I marked the package this transistor has been stored in and it's heritage is from one of the Philips FM828 series transceivers, way way back in the late 1970's ~ early 1980's!
While someone may not be servicing one of these transceivers these days, they make a good basis for a medium power RF amplifier, whether it be Class A, B or most likely C.
PRODUCT SAFETY ADVICE
This device casing contains beryllium oxide, the dust of which is toxic. The device is entirely safe provided that the BeO disc is not damaged (DO NOT GO FILING IT!)
PHILIPS - Power Transistor
Made in Australia
Type: BLY89A
Designed for industrial, commercial use and these can also be found in old military equipment.
NPN RF Power Transistor
SPECIAL NOTE:
While the usual PH is not stamped onto the device, the Philips coding tells all ...
C indicates it was manufactured at the Hendon Works in South Australia
The rest of the coding (7810) tells me it was made in 1978 (!) around March (10th week)
This device was commonly used in commercial VHF frequency range and typical RF power output was around 25W
TESTING:
Being an extraction from a transceiver, I have checked the basic specifications of this device
hFE measured 11 (acceptable range is 10 ~ 80, depending upon test conditions)
COSMETIC CONDITION:
NO physical damage to the device
"Wings" (EBC) are in good shape and have plenty of length to be fitted onto the PCB RF copper pads.
Thread nut is supplied and moves freely
This transistor has now been specially packed into foam so that the wings are protected from undue stress while waiting to be put to use once again.
USED
Exactly as described
