BACKGROUND
We used this type of transformer in a customised audio product for a client sometime back ... the stock of these brand new AC transformers have all found new equipment to "live in" and today I have decided to extract these transformers from the three pieces of equipment that were still in the workshops but they are never going anywhere these days because I have retired and my previous businesses have all closed down after 35 years or so - now all the stockroom and workshop "bits and pieces" need to find new workshops or equipment to reside in.
I hear you ... "why do you bother Russ!"
I am very much "into" sustainability, a manufactured component (no matter how small) represents an appreciable amount of embedded energy and to waste that embedded energy is a very bad thing, even worse is to bury it in landfill and subsequently poison our environment!
What is embedded energy?
Embedded energy is a measurement of the total energy that was used to create a component, a module or a complete piece of equipment originally and should include all processes used in the manufacture of the item, from obtaining the raw materials, processing them, making the product and then shipping to another manufacturer in the "chain" or being supplied directly to stores as a finished product for retail sale.
AVEL-LINDBERG - AC Power Transformer
UK designed and manufactured
Type: OB 6/18
Flat thermoplastic case, epoxy resin filled and designed to be through-hole soldered direct to PCB's. Four screws using threaded holes molded in the corners of the case are used to supplement mechanical fixing.
The non-concentric twin primary and secondary windings are wound on separate bobbins, which gives maximum isolation and low inter-winding capacitance.
Features and benefits include:
- International Certifications
- Low Profile
- PCB Mounted
- Resin filled under vacuum
- 5KV AC flash test
- Industry Standard
- Certifications: VDE 0551, VDE 0570, IEC 742, EN60 742, EN61 558, UL 506, CSA C22.2, SEV 1003, CE Marked
- High reliability
PCB mounting
Low profile
Dimensions: 53mm x 43mm x 21mm Height
Fully resin encapsulated
Pin designations are clearly marked on the top
Hi Pot tested 5kV
Both the primary and secondary windings (two each side) are electrically isolated, not a centre tap arrangement, this means you can use this transformer on 120V AC input supplies or more likely (in Australia/NZ) series connect the primary for 240V AC input.
Similar thing for the secondaries ... 0-18V on each winding or connect in series for 0-36V AC output. Another possibility is connecting the secondaries in parallel so that you have 0-18V output but at a higher current capability.
Phasing is indicated on the top of the case
PRIMARY: 0 ~ 120V AC 2x
SECONDARY: 0 ~ 18V AC 2x @ 6VA (330mA) or wire in series for 36V @ 165mA
TESTING:
Although these transformers never left the workshops (meaning that they have barely seen any use), after extraction from the PCB, I checked the outputs on each transformer to make sure everything is fine - all good here.
COSMETIC CONDITION:
Like NEW (but obviously previously soldered to a PCB)
Clean
NO physical damage at all
NO indistinct or worn away labelling on the topside - easy to understand which pin does what.
I have now placed each transformer onto a bed of styrofoam and then within a sealed clear plastic packet - now they sit patiently (transformers are like that!) waiting to get back to work again.
