ARTWORK HISTORY & PERSONAL RAMBLINGS:

Another of our Australian oil paintings that has been with us for quite some time, purchased many years ago (since the late 1970's in fact)

This is one of many paintings that we affectionately called "space fillers"!

We love art, actually NZ & Australian landscapes to be more precise and most of our paintings are "medium" sized with some very large paintings but then we ended up with areas of "white space" on the walls - Oh dear, what to do?

The "light bulb" came on and it struck us that we could decorate those empty white areas of wall with much smaller paintings, like little windows into another world!

That was fine and worked well for us until we moved from a very large house to one much smaller - now we have a number of these smaller paintings with nowhere suitable to hang them!

This small painting is one of those "space fillers"

We don't have much information about the artist but we suspect this is a non-professional artist's work, not because it is badly created but due to the fact we could never find out much about the artist (we originally bought this painting from a little antique shop way out bush!)

For us, it's about the art not the artist so this lack of information didn't worry us at all.

UNTITLED - Australian Rural Homestead

K. TRINDER

Oil on board

Circa 1970's

Subject: Georgian style homestead in an Australian rural setting

Looks a little odd, placing the Georgian homestead in amongst the Australian rural landscape but long ago when the English settled in Australia and if you were "well heeled" (wealthy) it was desirable to "bring English architecture to Australia" using local materials such as sandstone and lime plaster. It was a prestige "thing" i.e having the means to bring the "home country" to your new country and it bought a feeling of familiarity.

It wasn't the homestead that grabbed us anyway, love that "sunburnt country" look surrounding the house.

Always thought is was just a bit out of place having the chimneys though - we wouldn't have thought there would be many cold nights out bush!

The painting is simple but gives you a little view "through the square window" into an early Australian rural scene.

As to where that house is now or where it was originally, no idea at all - unfortunately the artist did not write anything on the rear of the painting to indicate the location they painted.

MEASUREMENTS:

FRAME: 220mm wide x 205mm high

ARTWORK: 122mm wide x 108mm high

Told you it was small!

WEIGHT: 400g (Easy to hang without special wall support!)

CONDITION:

CLEAN

Light discolouration to the border fabric but not covered in fly spots!

Gold painted frame is undamaged and looks great!

Resealed the rear of the frame because after 50 years, the old paper tape had begun to fall apart - a nice and sealed now

TAKE NOTE: If you look up towards the top left hand side there is a "swirling" in the sky. Those are brush strokes but there is a small area of white which does NOT appear to be a flake off but a dab of the brush - maybe on the day of painting there was one little white cloud in the sky? It really doesn't look like damage though.

Wire hanging cord is fitted to the rear (not nylon)

Now that we will not be keeping this artwork and I have finished the description, it has been placed in a sealed cellowrap packet to ensure it does not collect dust and dirt - it will be sent to the new owner in this way.
