ARTWORK HISTORY:

Our family is very much into "the Arts" in all it's forms, from music to art to chinaware and even classic old (quality) technology!

Our focus has always been landscapes, both Australian and New Zealand as we have connections with both countries but over the years our walls have become overcrowded with artworks and although we love just about every painting we have, it's time to hang some new acquisitions and sadly this NZ oil painted by the listed Australian artist Allan Waite must now leave home!

You can see the other Allan Waite artwork that I have HERE

ALLAN WAITE:

1924 ~ 2010

Born in Goulburn but lived much of his life in Sydney.

WWII veteran and after the war he studied art full-time at the National Art School (Sydney) under greats such as Frank Hinder, Herbert Badham and John Godson. He operated a commercial art studio until the 1970's but after suffering increasing hearing loss attributed to his military service, he sold the business but continued to create artworks prolifically until his passing in 2010.

Although many of his paintings are Australian based, Allan travelled, as is apparent by the oils he has painted in New Zealand and I have seen other paintings he created which are based in other South Pacific countries.

His works are very collectable and known to be in many council and government institutions in addition to private collections.

SUBJECT OF THE PAINTING:

Landscape scene set in Queenstown, but perhaps not Queenstown as many would know it! This was painted by Allan in the 1970's - actually that weatherboard house would have been pretty modern for Queenstown 50 years ago! I enjoyed the Otago area during those years and Queenstown was not the tourist mecca it is today and in fact it was a bit like walking into the Wild West! It was pretty "rugged" in those days and a visit to Queenstown and the surrounding areas was a lot like "going bush" here in Australia.

The house to the left of the painting would now be long gone but I have found a modern photograph of the "area" to give an idea of what it looks like now.

The painting is titled by Allan "Morning Peninsula St. (Queenstown) but actually I think Allan made a small mistake here, there is no Peninsula Street in Queenstown, it is called Peninsula Road and is situated on Peninsula Hill.

Allan's focus in this painting is the light and how it plays on the conifers in the early morning, that sunrise on the conifers is stunning and it reminds me a bit of the song "Morning Has Broken" from Cat Stevens! Those conifers are actually called Wilding Conifers and are a very invasive tree in the NZ high country, a lot of money is spent trying to control them.

In the background (grey whites) is the indistinct view of The Remarkables, a very rugged mountain range surrounding Queenstown. I am guessing that Allan has not painted them in detail because they may have been shrouded in mist at that time of the day.

ALLAN WAITE - Morning, Peninsula St. (Queenstown)

Oil on primed canvas (RAW not stretched)

Allan has signed his work on the lower left hand side (Black)

Artwork measurements: 410mm wide x 310mm high

Canvas measurements:  428mm wide x 330mm high

Artwork is clean

I have visually inspected this painting very carefully and I cannot see any flaking, flaws or damage to the artwork.

NOTE: you can notice a strange "rippling" effect to the colouring on the right hand side, lower area (below the conifers) - that is NOT a flaw but the light bouncing off the paint! It is quite heavily textured here.

Mounting a raw canvas can be a challenge, seek the advise of a professional framer! Allan has not left a wide margin for the border, this may present additional concerns when mounting.

Shipping is no problem, we have always stored this painting on a stiff cardboard "base" with a light foam sheeting covering the artwork and then sealed within cellowrap - this is the basic form in which it will be shipped (plus additional packaging of course)
