SWINNERTON'S (Hanley England) - Medium Tableware Bowl
Made in England
Style: Luxor Vellum (Reg. # 837606)
Circa 1940's ~ 1950's
Opaque earthernware, meaning that you cannot see through the walls of the bowl when held up to a strong light source
Overall Cream coloured background
Pattern: The name or pattern code number is unknown, unmarked. Looks to be a type of film transfer used for the decorative artwork, when viewed very closely I can see solid brush strokes but also dot patterns. I suspect that the style name "Vellum" is the clue here, as a vellum is a type of film or parchment.
The artwork is quite basic, being two flowers per grouping with foliage. The colouring is pale and comprises a Pink rose-like bud and Yellow-Orange trumpet shaped flower, much like a Daffodil or Jonquil. These small groups of flowers have been placed right around the outside of the bowl. The only other decorative work is around the broad top lip, this has been coloured a soft Lemon Yellow.
There is NO Gold gilding at all
DIMENSIONS:
My wife calls this a medium sized table bowl, similar to a standard size soup tureen but without a lid ... actually there is a rim which could accept a lid but I am told that she never had a lid with this bowl.
Mouth: 180mm (7") diameter or 230mm (9") edge to edge (broad rim)
Side 'tabs' to allow for easy lifting
Bowl depth: 60mm (2.5")
Weight: 560g
BACKSTAMP DETAILS:

Decorator's mark in Mauve, just below the backstamp
COSMETIC CONDITION:
USED
CLEAN
NO cracks
NO fleabites
NO discolouration to both the base Cream colouring nor the decorative work, including the top Lemon Yellow band
NO severe or excessive knife/spoon scraping marks to the central area of the bowl
NO crazing - amazing, I would have expected at least some light crazing after all these years but I have wet and dry checked the earthernware and cannot see any crazing at all
