HISTORY:

My wife "collects" but is changing which type of china/porcelain she wants (now pre-1900's) and she has come to realise that many of our special items need to "leave home" to find a new, caring home to live in.

Our philosophy is love and appreciation for the imagination and creative skills used when designing and making these pieces so many years ago. We are not into "let's make a quick buck" here as it does appear many others like to do ... take a look around online at greed in action with atmospheric asking prices which only pushes this wonderful chinaware further and further out of reach for the "Average" collector.

Our asking price for these Shelley pieces reflects our philosophy and if all three pieces are purchased then an automatic discount will apply at the checkout.

DLAT RATING: 9/10 (Darling Look At This!)

Dainty, delicate, very pleasing shape and yes, yet more flowers but at least this time they are pretty little Blue flowers!

Circa 1945 ~ 1966

Bright White Fine Bone China

Pattern: BLUE ROCK

Pattern #: 13591

Hand decorated

Background colour is brilliant White

Design: These pieces are dominated by a pattern of single and grouped pale Blue flowers with foliage, even inside the teacup.

Goid gilding is not used in this pattern, with the trimmings being decorated in a matching pale Blue colour.

Shape: The teacup is a "standard" shape with a normal handle (not high back) but unlike many teasets, the top rim is not scalloped but instead has eight "dips" or notches in the top rim. The rim of all pieces is finished with the Mauve colouring.

It would have to be said that overall the design is very nice to look at but not overly ostentatious. This teaset will NOT scream at your guests "Look at me! Look at me!", it has subtlety and assumed "class"

Fine Bone China, meaning it is very light to hold and translucent (you can easily see the shadow of your fingers through the china when held up to a strong light source)

Circa period of 1945 ~ 1966 (based on the backstamp design) but we know for sure these pieces all date from the late 1940's as we were gifted a lot of old Shelley many moons ago which the original owner purchased in the late 1940's, just after the WWII - remember that "fancy tableware" production was largely halted during WWII by British Government decree (Wartime Concentration Scheme) so when the production of fancy tableware was allowed once again, this type of teaware was very popular in the late 1940's ~ early 1950's

BACKSTAMP DETAILS:

Makers mark printed on the base of the teacup (under the glaze)

Makers mark printed on the base of the saucer (under the glaze)

Makers mark printed on the base of the side plate (under the glaze)

Blue & Red markings off to the side of the backstamp are the decorators marks

DIMENSIONS:

TEACUP: 90mm mouth x 64mm height

SAUCER: 147mm diameter

SIDE PLATE: 164mm diameter

CONDITION:

This first section of the condition report is universal to all three pieces, any difference or flaws are noted below this section

NO cracks

NO crazing

NO discolouration observed to the brilliant White base porcelain

NO damage or wear is apparent to the decorative artwork

SPECIFIC PIECE DETAIL

Teacup: Oh dear, not good here ... something has gone amiss (my wife didn't even know about this) as I can see a tiny chip on the rim of this teacup (see one of the photographs) small, yes but easy to feel and see when looked at closely. Such a shame but at least there has been no subsequent cracking or any other damage to this teacup ... the asking price has been adjusted accordingly.

In relation to other aspects of this teacup, no damage or wear showing to the decorations or the rim, handle and near the foot pale Blue colouring and there is no staining inside the teacup mouth.

Saucer: The decoration is in good condition with no signs of wear or damage. Absolutely no cracks or chips however I can see just one tiny fleabite to the underside, which is not discoloured.

Sideplate: NO damage to the decorative work, no chips, no cracking, no fleabites - this sideplate is in great condition.

A very pretty Shelley trio and it's a shame about the teacup in particular but this should still be useful for someone who just wants a piece or two of the trio - I just couldn't bear throwing out the teacup and hope that someone can still make use of it!
