HISTORY
Now here's some REAL, American original rock n roll from the mid 1950's!
Jimmy Cavello was (passed away in 2019) an American musician and with his band, the house rockers, they were the first white band to play at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in celebration of the movie Rock, Rock, Rock release.
Before continuing, please realise that this record is NOT made from vinyl but instead uses a composite material called Shellac, commonly used prior to "modern" vinyl materials.
I have sort of "played" this record but not "properly" because of the rotation speed (78) and to play these correctly you need a nice fat old style styli to run in the grooves properly, this was pressed when the grooves were much wider than modern vinyl and if played using a modern stylus, the surface noise level will be much higher due to the styli sloping around all over the place while it runs in the grooves.
Please, if you are not a collector (who would already be aware of this), these shellacs are brittle and do not take kindly to undue bending or flexing - they will snap!
Like all records, whether they be shellac, acetate or vinyl, keep this record away from heat sources - these "memories" on shellac or vinyl hate heat.
Now let's get down to the details ...
JIMMY CAVELLO AND HIS HOUSE ROCKERS - Rock Rock Rock
Coral Records
Cat # CS-1233
Mono recording
Should be spun at 78 plus and you need (or should) use the correct WIDE tip styli to play this properly - these were often just referred to as "78 styli"
1956
Australian release through Festival Australia
Columbia generic sleeve is in good condition considering the years that have passed by. NO personal writing, no tears and not even a seam split but there is some small "corner curls"
A new (modern) plastic liner sleeve is supplied to protect the shellac
The shellac record is also in good condition. So often shellac is terribly damaged over the years due to it's brittle nature and general careless handling - NOT THIS COPY. I have examined the record on both sides and can only see one or two extremely light scratches, certainly no gouging (it happens!). The shellac surface is a little dull, even with cleaning. No edge chips and absolutely no cracks! I have placed this record on the turntable but only spinning at 45 (I usually don't play 78's these days!) to check for warps - there are none. Actually at this point I couldn't help myself and I DID play the record, at 45 and with a much smaller styli than should have been used but the sound was great, although soooooo sloooooow! I was impressed at both the lack of surface noise and clicks n pops, even with the incorrect turntable styli and running speed! Side A is particularly clean and even over on Side B there are just two short, low level clicks around the middle of the song and a few more just before the runout - not bad for a very popular record dating back some 70+ years ago!.
An additional clear plastic sleeve is fitted to the sleeve packaging to protect the whole package
SIDE A
Rock, Rock, Rock
SIDE B
The Big Beat
When being shipped, this shellac will be sitting on very stiff 3 wall export cardboard in a "sandwich" style so that there is no way it can be flexed while in transit.
