HISTORY:

In the world of Royal Doulton, it is as though this earthenware container just left the works! It actually dates from around the early 1980's, when my wife bought it. This was part of a much larger tableware set but over the years "pieces have left the family" for various reasons - it happens!

This is earthenware not bone china, much heavier and "tough", in fact it is dishwasher, detergent, oven & freezer proof - all the areas where you should never place any old Royal Doulton. This LS1005 pattern was produced by Doulton during the period 1970's through to the early 1980's. For us, by English chinaware and earthenware standards this is a 'youngster' compared to other products produced by Royal Doulton. I have seen folks elsewhere online calling these "vintage" good God, maybe if someone is 20 years old this may seem like a vintage item but for us (who are much much older) this is very "modern" in the world of Royal Doulton.

Even though it is from the 1980's, Doulton had managed to resist the temptation of lowering costs by sending production overseas, this sugar bowl was made in England

The pattern is called Tangiers and has a Moroccan look to it.

ROYAL DOULTON - Lidded Tableware Container

Made in England

Pattern: LS1005 TANGIER

Circa 1970's ~ early 1980's

Earthenware - not fine Chinaware

Loose fitting lid which does not have a seal and for this reason, the container only had contents when actually being needed. My wife felt that leaving sugar in the canister was just asking for trouble due to humidity making the sugar go lumpy AND possibly a visit from the local ant population! Actually I am told that sometimes the container was also used to hold tea leaves instead of sugar.

Measurements: 75mm diameter mouth at the top which opens out to 103mm diameter for most of the container. The height is 80mm (excluding the lid)

Weight: 425g

BACKSTAMP DETAILS:

Here is a photograph of the actual backstamp on the underside of this container.

NOTE: As there is no mention of "microwave safe", don't do it! but then, who puts their sugar or tea leaves in the microwave in any case?

The reference to 1973 would be when the pattern was registered, it is not a reference as to when this item was manufactured.
