BACKGROUND:

These teaset pieces are offered separately and you can purchase whichever individual pieces you may need. These were produced by Royal Doulton towards the last few years of WWII, because they have the A to the left of the backstamp, which was a marking system introduced in 1942 under instructions from the British Government.

This is the period in which the British Government introduced the Wartime Concentration scheme, specifically in 1941, which restricted the operations of all potteries, some being closed down temporarily or their product focus was to be a limited domestic supply and also to the armed services. The idea was to focus on production of only necessary items and also to free up staff so that they could assist in supporting the war effort.

Even with the restrictions placed upon the English potters, Doulton managed to produce what remains to be an attractive (although quite simple in design) product for the domestic market.

DLAT Rating: 9/10 (Darling, look at this!)

I have just been given by my wife some more Royal Doulton pieces, these being the pattern D6419 and the pattern was named CARNATION.

Like much of the wares produced by Royal Doulton, there is more to them than just what you see ... the CARNATION Pink flower symbolises Gratitude, all types of gratitude ... gratitude to have your friends around for afternoon tea, gratitude for your family or simply gratitude for still being alive (I can relate to that!) Deep and meaningful huh?

Oh yes, and apparently it is the "official" Mother's Day flower (according to Google AI although I wouldn't trust my life with the information it spews forth sometimes!) I always thought the Mother's Day flower was Chrysanthemums, so there you go ...

ROYAL DOULTON - Teacup, Saucer, Side Plate, Creamer Jug & Cake Serving Plate

Every piece is available separately (maximum purchasing flexibility) and as more pieces are purchased, the price is automatically discounted at the checkout area.

Opaque (you cannot see the shadow of your fingers when either piece is held to a bright light)

Pattern: D6419

Name: CARNATION

Hand decorated*

*Looking very closely at the techniques used for the decoration, it has characteristics of hand painting in that the artist has used a combination of solid brush strokes and some infilling with "dabs", colours are often overlaid, such as around the foliage.

The design is a simple, "peaceful" spray of small flowers of the meadow, dominated by much larger Carnation(s) and of course the foliage.

All pieces have Gold gilding to the outer edge/rim only.

The teacup has no decoration inside the mouth.

Cream coloured china base

All the pieces are pretty "standard" sizes, the exception being the unusually shaped cake serving plate which measures 267mm x 240mm at the widest points. My wife calls this the "eye plate" due to the shape.

Times were tough back then, very tough in fact. Life was very difficult for many during and after WWII in England - What could be better than a nice "cuppa o' tea" with the Doulton? "Could you pop the kettle on the stove, Pet?" Not electric stoves, usually wood or coal burning with a "hot" plate on the top. All of this whilst sitting in their darkened kitchen (all windows were "blacked out" to reduce light from the houses so that the enemy bombers couldn't "take their bearings" from any lights down below them.

It seems bizarre to think of how "things" were back in those days, 85+ years ago, anxiously listening for the droning sounds of the enemy aircraft to passing overhead, the sounds of explosions and there, sitting in front of you is this very lovely Royal Doulton ware ... bizzare!

Yes, this plate is not perfect and in fact it is in the worst condition of all these D6419 pieces!

Why so?

There are two small, non-discoloured, fleabites to the underside ... nothing is perfect! (even Doulton) But that isn't the main problem ...

Crazing abounds on this plate! Why only this plate, who knows, but it is easily visible. Small, hairline cracks in the glazing going in all directions. Both topside and underneath. None of these cracks in the glazing have allowed any "nasties" to reach the base clay so fortunately NO discolouring has occurred. Just in case, I have carefully fine mist sprayed both sides of the plate with Iso Alcohol to kill off any bacteria that may be lurking!

Perfectly functional and it is visually "reasonable" to look at but ... she is showing signs of age, those dreaded wrinkles abound.

Overall, with the exception of the cake serving plate, these Royal Doulton D6419 Carnation tablewares are in extremely good condition, particularly considering that they are around 85 years old now!
