New Hall Pottery Co, operations began 1899~1900 at the New Hall Works, located at Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent. The pottery works had a visit from King George V and Queen Mary in 1913, indicating that the pottery had established quite a reputation however in their early days it was primarily for toilet sets, not tea, breakfast ware or trinkets. The market for toilet sets was declining and the company focused on trinkets, jugs and tea/breakfast ware where they had renewed success - adaption to your markets!

This small utility dish is one of their Charles Dickens themed pieces

NEW HALL POTTERY CO. (Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent) UK - Utility Dish (or Butter Pat)

While this dish would suit use as a Butter Pat, I don't believe it ever has been due to the very nice condition of the top side, no knife scratch marks at all.

Circa 1930 ~ 1951 (confirming by the Green backstamp used)

Opaque China/Earthenware (meaning you cannot see "shadows" through the china if held to the light)

Theme: Charles Dickens

Pattern: Depiction of Mr Pecksniff from the novel Martin Chizzlewit, written in 1843

Who was Mr Pecksniff? He is a caricature of hypocrisy, selfishness, and false virtue. He is a fraudulent, unctuous architect who takes in pupils for premiums but never teaches them, instead passing off their work as his own.

Shape: Square with rounded corners

A pretty standard square dish design, decorated by hand onto a Cream-Yellow base. I have double checked the workpersonship and this is definitely hand created, using a combination of dots, dashes and line drawings. The artwork is of such a standard I just had to double check this.

On the underside of the dish are the decorator's markings

DIMENSIONS:

Four sided with rounded corners

101mm x 101mm x 15mm deep

Weight: 96g

COSMETIC CONDITION:

Clean

NO cracks

NO discolouration

Decorations (the artwork) is undamaged

The top side glazing has a very high lustre and I can see some faint crazing lines, these are not immediately obvious though and most wouldn't even notice them.

The underside has a couple of "fleabites" but again, nothing serious.

A nice example of some HANLEY themed trinketware from 75+ years ago
