LET'S TALK BACKING UP OF YOUR DATA ...

I take data backup of all my records, photographs etc very seriously and always used "portable" media for backups just in case 'THAT' day came along ... it always will, eventually, the day when hardware systems fail or a catastrophe such as fire or theft of equipment and there is nothing more reassuring than having a local (or off-site) hard backup of all your important information. Never ever trust things such as "the cloud" - bad things happen and just when you need access to such services, they are down - I know because this has happened to me.

Anyway, late last year disaster did strike here and due to a suspected massive voltage spike on the 240V supply lines which even fried the line filtering I used (or 3i ATLAS! that mysterious intergalactic object passing through our solar system at the moment) I suffered considerable hardware damage and have only now been building the systems back up from the stored copies I had made, some backups were on these DVD-R and others on CDR-R media. While reconstructing the IT hardware I decided to move to other forms of mass storage so these DVD-R discs are no longer going to be used i.e they are now excess to my needs.

I also take sustainability very seriously, it's my passion ... saving and hopefully reusing items that may at first glance appear to be "out dated" or no longer needed for their original intended purpose.

Sustainability is far more than NOT burying waste material back into the earth but it is a change in thinking when it comes to items that humans create, consciously recognising the energy expended to create the item through it's various "stages" in life, beginning with the raw materials being extracted from the earth, processed, finished and then fitted into equipment - every single step used energy which is referred to as embodied energy.

To give an approximate representation of how much energy was used in the WHOLE production process of an item, I have created what I refer to as the Ee (Embodied Energy) value, measured in Mj

The Ee value is an approximation only and usually measured in Mj.

Coming up with an Ee value is an attempt to take into account the energy used for extracting and processing of the raw materials, manufacturing of the component, distribution of the component(s) and final assembly of the component. In fact the measurement of Ee can become extremely complicated and highly technical, many tertiary institutions are involved in this specialised field of science.

I have used various reliable sources online to arrive at approximate Ee values for various products and material, these are approximations and the sole purpose of this information is to raise awareness of the extraordinary amount of energy consumed in the creation of various electronic components and hardware - it may give you cause to think twice before wasting all that energy and burying it in the ground, with the possible side-effects of poisoning the environment due to leeching.

HERE is a page I have created which gives some tables and more detailed information about specific Ee values for different materials plus a link which you can use as a starting point to investigate Ee for yourself.

So let me give some details about these discs

Top surface has a White coating so that these can be printed using a quality inkjet CD face printer, models such as the

Unlike the Verbatim CD-R discs that I have, there is no identification laser print within the CD hub area, all identification of the contents must be made using the top surface.

Packaged in a "cake box" as a stack of 43 discs

Just to be sure, I have checked EVERY SINGLE DISC to ensure the dye is not discoloured or scratched - all are A1

I am offering the complete cake box containing 43x PRINCO DVD-R 8x blank discs, not each disc!

I have now packed this cake box (with padding as it is not a full cake box) into a sealed, clear plastic packaging to maintain the current condition prior to be sent off to a new owner.
