Collet knobs are used where the component shaft is round without a 'flat' spot and the internal mechanism provides a secure, tight grip onto the shaft
This knob was removed from a very nice piece of Italian test equipment and fits a very small control shaft (4mm) NOT the larger (and more common) 6.35mm type

The flange has a White top & side visible pointer line
