Seaside serendipity!
While my wife was hunting through her VERY LARGE collection of beautiful chinaware's, ceramics and porcelain, with a view to "making space" and so finding new homes for some of them ... she discovers these little gems!
Goodness me, these take me way back in time ... much of Australia's population lives or plays near the ocean and these were part of our "Central Coast Kit" from long ago ...
A song springs to mind ...
Ok, enough silliness!
Beside the obvious theme, these are beautifully made teacup and saucer (ish) duo's with a basic theme of seashore shells but love that handle! It depicts kelp ...
Lovely soft colouring on a bright White porcelain base.
Now these are difficult to find, although we wouldn't say rare as some do. We also seriously question the true origins of this product. Sure, the underside backstamp indicates a connection with Australia but it does not specifically say "Made In ..." We tend to feel that these were imported into Australia either as blanks or even complete products. Information about Baymark Australia is sparse, actually to be frank, practically non-existant!
We purchased these in the 1980's from a retail store specialising in "interesting things" and they were not cheap at that time.
The decoration appears to be hand applied, looking very closely at the work, it does not have the distinctive "dots" of transferware
In any case, they are very "pretty", unusual and fitted in perfectly at the holiday house near the sea.
SPECIAL NOTE:
While we are looking for new caring homes to look after our items, we also know that some may only want this piece or that piece and not be forced to purchase a complete duo. For this reason, each piece of this Seaside duo is priced separately and available individually.
If however someone does want to purchase a complete duo then an automatic discount does apply and if taking both complete duo's, even further discounting is automatically applied.
There is a "drop down box" on this page so you can select which pieces you would like
Now let's get down (and boogie) ... here are the details
BAYMARK AUSTRALIA - Teaset Duo
Two complete duo's are available, all can be purchased individually or "mix n match"
Material: Heavy bright White porcelain
Opaque - holding to a strong light source and you cannot see the shadows of your fingers through the porcelain EXCEPT the central area of the saucer, here it is slightly translucent.
Circa 1980's
Design: Seaside theme, specifically sea shells ... the teacup is a shell, it is surrounded by shells, the saucer//almost "tennis like" plate is a fan shell with the only part that differs being the teacup handle which is a well crafted twisted kelp design.
The makers mark or backstamp is printed UNDER the glaze, it is not a stick on label.
Bit of a "show pony" really, you will not get a lot of tea into this cup! In fact we used to treat these more as demitasse cups because they only hold 50mL or about 1/4 cup of tea or Continental Coffee.
The "saucer" can also be used as a side plate for your cake slice or sandwich
BACKSTAMP:
Just this solitary printed mark on the underside of each piece, no other information or artist's marks etc
TEACUP
SAUCER//PLATE
These maker's marks are UNDER the glaze and not a stick on clear label
