HISTORY:

More chinaware bits & pieces which my wife has handed me to "look after" (find new homes for) ... originally part of a complete teaset trio but at this stage I have only been given the side plates to advertise.

Adderley began operations in the early 20th Century, was then acquired by the Lawley Group in the late 1940's becoming a business that worked in conjunction alongside Ridgways (also part of the Lawley Group) which was later followed by inclusion into the Royal Doulton group which eventually resulted in the Adderley "name" no longer being used after the early 1970's

ADDERLEY - Side Plate

Circa 1960's +

This Adderley mark looks to be from around the 1960's, reminds me a lot of the Ridgway backstamps of the period however I was surprised to find signs of "human hand created decoration", because by the 1960's most works were using less labor intensive (lower production cost) transferware methods of decoration.

Close examination of the decorative work reveals solid colours but some "dot painting", as though the work is a fusion of hand crafting and transfer technology, a lot was going on in this area of decoration in the 1950's in particular as it was important to reduce the cost of producing chinaware products from all potteries, not just Adderley's. Additional to the observed method of decoration, each piece does have both the artist's (decorator) mark and Gold gilder's mark on the rear.

This chinaware is translucent, meaning that if held to a light source you can see the shadow of your fingers through the china.

Pattern: The name of this pattern is not indicated, nor is there a code.

Design: Two visually striking pieces of artwork, each depicting what appears to be a species of Vine Flowers with foliage and definitely not your traditional roses or flowers of the garden. Separate to these two designs is simply a sprig of vine foliage.

Gold gilding has been heavily applied to the scalloped edge rim to finish the side plate.

BACKSTAMP:

This is a photograph of the backstamp taken from one of these side plates, I have four but all are practically identical except for the placement of the artist and gilder's marks.

DIMENSIONS:

157mm diameter

Note that the side plate sides have something like a fluting all around, not smooth.

COSMETIC CONDITION:

The following report refers to ALL of the side plates I am offering. Any substantial differences between the side plates will be indicated below this section

NO damage to the artwork

NO chips

NO crazing was observed (wet or dry)

NO significant knife scratch marks to the central area

NO significant wear is observed to any of the side plates, note however that the hand application means there is at times some inconsistency both in thickness and placement on the rim. It must have been very difficult to paint this Gold onto the rim in a perfect fashion, even for a highly skilled worker.

EACH side plate has just one, small, fleabite to the underside - none are without a fleabite.

No further comments about any these four side plates
