Another AC power transformer that has been extracted from some consumer equipment, the old (very old) PYE Cassette Player Model CD60
PYE were originally a British company, their products were aimed at the professional broadcast market and they were a well established "name" in that industry until around the mid 1980's when the company was "divested" with Philips picking up a number of their products but for the consumer, products were then produced in the PYE name only, being manufactured in Taiwan i.e made to a consumer "price point"
HERE is a great wealth of information about PYE UK, the birth of the company and their progression through the years, with a number of interesting articles and photographs.
BILLION ELECTRIC (TAIWAN) - AC POWER TRANSFORMER
Country of origin: Taiwan
Please be aware that there is no mention of International or Australian safety standards indicated on the transformer labelling although at the time the PYE machine was designed for the Australian marketplace
ID on the transformer is:
BILLION (stamped into one side)
4201484375B (Black printed across the top of the frame)
No other markings at all
Type: E iron core
Primary & Secondary are fully isolated - this is NOT an auto-transformer
All terminals are flying leads AND the secondary wires are solid core as this was used with wire wrap construction techniques, popular in the day - no issues soldering though.
Primary winding (Red - Red): 240V AC input ONLY
Secondary windings (dual isolated):
White - White: 12V
Blue - Blue: 26.5V
These secondary voltages are as measured WITHOUT LOAD
Estimated power handling capabilities, 15~20VA in total
Nice copper flux band
Also included is the original mounting frame, if used this also will help to keep leakage hum from the transformer to an absolute minimum - important with audio equipment.
DIMENSIONS:
42.5mm Width x 50.25mm Height x 46.75mm Depth
The two mounting feet increase the width to 60.5mm total width
Weight: 350g
External dimensions when mounted into the outer frame/shield
70mm Width x 48mm Height x 48mm Depth
TESTING:
Measured voltages are indicated above. I also checked that there is total isolation between the Primary and Secondary, the two Secondaries and the resistance between windings and the framework, which is "infinity" as tested on the 500V Megger
COSMETIC CONDITION:
USED
Clean
NO signs of previous transformer stress at all
ALL flying leads are in great condition, I particularly like the insulation used on both the primary and secondary flying leads. The primary wires are stranded but the secondary are solid core, for wire wrapping.
External frame is also in great shape and even the original cable strain clamping grommet is included - undamaged.
This transformer is now safely packed into a sealed clear plastic packet, waiting to do bring some other piece of electronic gear to life!
