HISTORY:

Keithley Instruments (USA) specialise in high quality data acquistion equipment and have been around since the mid 1940's. Around 2010 the company changed ownership and became a subsidiary of Tektronix.

This 7002 was in use at a Singapore manufacturing facility for a large multi-national electronic communications company until it was "side-lined" in favour of system upgrades.

This unit is quite old (in technology advancement terms) as it is from the 1990's but I do know that many facilities still use the 7002 Mainframes even now and they simply change the cards installed in the 7002 to suit their test needs.

See the photograph included of ALL the Keithley supplied cards that are currently available and can be used with the 7002 but also keep in mind that the 7002 will accept 3rd party (non-Keithley) cards (although it will not auto-configure with those cards) and it also can be used with the older Keithley 7005/7005 cards.

WHAT IS THE 7002?

The equipment's sole purpose in life is to provide matrix or crosspoint switching of both analog and digital signals from the cards. The 7002 is capable of providing up to 400 2-pole channels or 400 matrix crosspoints.

It is designed to either test multiple parameters of one "equipment under test" or to test multiple "equipment under test" for just one or two parameters.

An example could be where you need to connect four different instruments to ten different test points on a device-under-test. If you need to be able to connect any combination of instruments to any combination of test points at any time, then you do need a matrix switch.

NO cards are supplied or fitted

NO Light Pen (#7078 PEN)

The system functions fine without the Light Pen, but life is easier with one!

COSMETIC CONDITION:

Excellent, minor scratching on one panel cover and these are not bad.

NO case damage - this is all diecast aluminium, it would take a decent "drop" to damage one of these!

Both rubber carry handles are in excellent condition

The astute among you may notice that the top panel has the "feet mounting holes" showing, which means that panel is actually the base panel but the arrangement used previously mean't that other equipment sat on top of this 7002 so the base panel was placed on the top. The feet are NOT supplied though.

If the new owner wishes to go more traditional, just reverse the panels - easy task, 2x screws hold each panel in place and they just slide out towards the rear.

Display window is clean and clear

Display is bright and easy to read (blue/green VFD)

All labelling is unworn and easy to read

This equipment has been used in a clean environment and has not suffered abuse by the engineers or technical staff - it looks pristine.

Extensive photographs have been taken, both to show how well engineered this equipment is.

TESTING:

While the equipment may look pristine, of course what really matters is .... "does it work?"

Absolutely A1 in this regard

Powered up the 7002 and after a short POST the display comes alive and sits on the Default menu selection.

This is no "dumb" box! There are 3x uP's looking after things and extensive programming options are available to the user - including the selection of which menu is the Power On default.

I had a look at all the Menu options and tested those that I could without any cards installed i.e internal system such as the EPROM etc and of course the Display (very extensive testing available), the correct operation of ALL buttons and the LED matrix display to the right-hand side.

The Menu system is well organised, easy to understand and navigate - such a joy to work with such well laid out equipment!

I have supplied a few screen shots while testing, I had NO problems with any of the tests - everything is coming up A1

I paid special attention to the display, that is a vital part of the system and made sure there are NO missing or faded "dots" - the display is bright and easy to read.

This VFD is quite special in that it has two lines, top being 20 character alphanumeric and the lower row being 32 character alphanumeric.

Same goes for the buttons, I checked every single button using the Test Menu and made sure each switch contact was quick and "positive" - these use conductive membrane switches which must always be checked after so many years since manufacture.

Just one item DOES NEED CHANGING, the memory battery! It has been a while and it is a good idea to change the internal battery. This is located on the side PCB (uP's - it looks after most of the functions including saving user settings). Access is not difficult, just remove the screws holding the side panel and there is the board. The battery is NOT soldered with a standard clip type fitting and the type you need is a 2450 large button battery. You can operate the equipment without changing this battery but don't be surprised when your custom settings are not retrievable!

This 7002 Mainframe is fine for shipping, anywhere around Australia is FREE shipping.

International shipping is also fine, at current international shipping rates (which are NOT cheap! - enter your location in the checkout area and Australia Post will automatically provide a quote for shipping)
