I hear you! A relay? What The?

Relays were a nice clean solution back in the day and often found in older equipment, both professional and consumer grade (remember that little click when you turn on the amplifier at home? That's the loudspeaker protection relay kicking in.

Now this particular relay is special in that it is a direct/correct replacement for servicing the DBX 1231 Equaliser

The DBX 1231 has a special audio bypass in the design, if the power supply rails "drop off", the relay de-energises and you have audio but no longer is the EQ unit functioning - audio is sent straight from the input to the output because something is wrong with the EQ circuits/power supply. This is a particularly useful feature (although damn annoying when it happens) as the user still has audio running through the system but without the EQ function - NO DEAD AUDIO, the arch enemy of all audio professionals (in the broadcast industry is it referred to as "dead air" - all hell breaks loose if this happens!

Anyway, here is the miniature relay that switches the audio and if you don't remember where it goes, here is a photograph (the little red beastie near the rear connectors and partially obscured by the ribbon cable)
