The data below was obtained from my Siemens Opto databook, I also have the LD242 I's HERE and those appear to be identical diodes but are not mentioned in my databook.

NOTE: The I suffix indicates the radiation intensity - there are 3 grades, these being I II and III

These are excellent for the experimenter wishing to create a source of Infra Red light for communications (can be modulated), create a light beacon which is invisible to the naked human eye or "bath" an area in IR light for security purposes.
Never heard of an IR beacon before? The international robotics competition called Robocup (robots playing soccer autonomously) use a soccer ball that emits IR light which the "players" must find while on the playing field.
