I am cleaning up ALL the various leads, patch cables etc that we had on hand hanging in the audio workshop area. Each lead is advertised separately and I have attempted to provide as much information as possible about each lead.

ALL have been professionally assembled, using high quality components, no point in testing pro audio gear with dodgy leads!

Here is one of those leads ...

SWITCHCRAFT - Audio Lead

Customised wiring

1/4" TRS jack plug to 3.5mm TRS plug

There are NO identification markings on the body of the 3.5mm jack plug

The usual stamped SWITCHCRAFT imprints are found on the 1/4" jack plug

Unidentified SMALL DIAMETER (2.4mm OD) single core cable TIMES TWO! This cable is single core so whenever a technician made up this cable, they used 2x single core cables for interconnecting the plugs.

I have carefully examined the cable sheath and can find no markings at all throughout the entire length

3.5mm plug is Gold plated

1/4" plug is Chrome plated

Customised connections....

The wiring is as you would expect, tip to tip/ring to ring and the shield (tight, fine braid) is connected to the body of the connectors at both ends.

3.5mm TRS plug

A mylar sleeve is used to provide insulation for the very small connections inside the plug

NO cable strain relief is fitted.

Interesting body fitting, when fully "screwed on", there is a small area at the front (with a thread exposed) which seems to indicate this plug can be "locked" to a suitable female connector.

RCA plug

Has no mylar sleeve and no cable strain relief fitted.

Connections at both ends look sound and secure

Some measurements ...

Total measured resistance 2.08 Ohm (one core, end to end)

Measured capacitance (shield to one core, the entire length) 271pF (between cores, the entire length) 188pF

This works out at 20.3pF per foot, which isn't too bad at all and should have little effect on the frequency response at audio frequencies. Pity the cable maker doesn't seem to have identified their product though!

Probably not very useful in it's current form for general purpose use but the cable (if somewhat thin) is nice and those connectors are definitely a quality build, they are NOT Asian el-cheapo's where the Gold or Chrome tends to rub off!

Now that my forensic examination has been completed, this lead has been placed in a sealed clear plastic packet and will be supplied this way.
