Die Primitiven Des Japanholzschnitts

Author: Julius Kurth

Publishing house: Wolfgang Jess - Dresden

Printed in Germany

Hardcover - light embossing with the central publishers mark laid into the cover with gold gilding. Spine is cloth.

German language

Historical arts reference - specifically dealing with Japanese Woodcut artworks (Ukiyo-e)

This book is a first edition: 1922

Deals with the various Ukiyo-e artists from the 16th to 19th Century, their works and some background to the artists and their signatures.

Fourty two plates, four of which are colour. These colour plates are very interesting, being mounted onto heavier stock paper, almost a card feel to it and actually just hanging from the page, not printed directly onto it. Each plate acknowledges the artist and then has a short German description of the artwork shown.

Two pages of Ukiyo-e artist signatures/markings

PLUS - just sitting inside the rear of the book is a four page typed letter dated much later (1955) which talks about the Japanese woodblock artworks and then promotes a special exhibition of these works at various venues in Germany during 1955.

Book condition can be considered as very good

Cover is not marked or damaged HOWEVER you can see a light colour fading due to being on the bookshelf/sunlight - to stabilise this fading the book has been kept sealed and in a dark area for the last 10 years or so but the damage has already been done unfortunately.

Spine is intact and secure

Pages do have some light yellowing

No mildew spots

Plates are all in excellent condition

I have examined this book VERY carefully, although everything is in very good condition it "feels" delicate and needs to be treated with care when turning the pages.

Stamped inside front cover as once being owned by Dr Alfred Schiener

No other writing or print at all

Stored in a sealed protective plastic bag

Tested as described in the description This item is not returnable
