Oh Dear! This item has been sold but take a look around for other similar items

We don't often offer our glassware and this bowl has been rather special for us over the years but it is now time for it to make way for our other interesting pieces - there is only so much space for all these objects of beauty!

Like all Carnival glass, it is best placed where daylight or sunlight can give the best visual effect to the glass and we used to have this on a coat rack table near the front door, the daylight would give a very stunning irridescent effect and ALWAYS we had comments from visitors to our previous home.

Yes, it is Carnival glass but quite rare primarily because of the outstanding design. Oh so Art Deco (our favourite period because traditional designs were being challenged at the time)

Actually we have come to believe this is Australiana! Way back in the late 1930's, an Australian glass manufacturer was producing exactly this type of design, with the distinctive bulbous horizontal ribs, often referred to as Melon Ribs.

GLASSWARE BOWL - Carnival Glass

PROBABLY Australian Glass Manufacturers circa late 1930's (see notes above)

Colour: Marigold

Base colour is clear glass with the doped oxides giving that distinctive "colours of the rainbow/oil colouring" Predominant colouring is Orange ~ Red ~ Pink but it depends what type of light is shining on it and when in daylight, all the colours of the rainbow can be seen.

Base is absolutely clear (quite normal for Carnival Glass) and there is no makers marks

Glass thickness is 4mm (measured at the top rim) so it is not heavy glass but neither is it "paper thin"

Made as ONE PIECE, this glassware has not been "pressed" and there are no joins or seam lines anywhere.

Oxide doping (to give the colour sheen effect) is consistent all over the piece, inside and out - with the exception of the base as mentioned above.

THE DESIGN:

Unlike many other Carnival glass pieces, there is practically no design work at all!

The shape is the design and it is VERY Art Deco in nature with the added touch of a multi-faceted top rim. I mean by this that the rim is not just smooth and circular but instead has been cut as segments (10 of them!) which gives a type of bevel effect to the top rim.

DIMENSIONS:

Base: 154mm diameter

NOTE: the base must have a slight curve because when it is placed on a flat tabletop, the bowl can fairly easily be rotated

Bulbous Horizontal Ribs: 250mm diameter

Top rim: 195mm

Mouth: 152mm

Total height of the bowl: 160mm

Weight: 1.4Kg

Make no mistake! This bowl will dominate wherever it is placed, it is not one of the more common small Carnival Glass pieces

COSMETIC CONDITION:

CLEAN

NO discolouration of any kind

NO chips!

NO cracks!

The base is clear, it has not been doped, and you can see a couple of very light "movement" scratches - nothing extraordinary though.

I also noticed a couple of "air bubbles" within the glass (in the rib area)

As mentioned above, there are no seam lines or joins. This piece was made in one process, not pressed, and quite frankly, the creator's skill is quite amazing! Imagine creating those four bulbous ribs around the bowl and the special shaping of the top rim! Not only a great "looker" but awesome craftsmanship!
