ARTWORK HISTORY:

Our family is very much into "the Arts" in all it's forms, from music to creative art to chinaware and even classic old (quality) technology!

Our focus has always been landscapes, both Australian and New Zealand but over the years we have gathered far too many and new homes must be found for our "excess" artworks.

Back in the late 1970's we purchased (and paid a "pretty penny") this painting while travelling across the Blue Mountains on our regular "going bush" trips - Ah those were the days!

This original oil in a wonderful Victorian stylised wooden frame is one of the artworks which sadly must now find a new home!

LEON HANSON:

Born 1918, Leon passed away in 2011.

He formally trained at the Julian Ashton school and privately with Sir Arthur Streeton, Robert Johnson and James Ranalph Jackson. Leon paints in the Heidelberg School style, an Australian art movement in the late 19th century, some refer to it as Australian impressionism movement. Leon Hanson was a prolific professional artist, he has exhibited widely and successfully in Australia and his works hang in many private and institutional collections in addition to the Art Gallery of NSW.

SUBJECT:

The awesome Capertee Cliffs, Capertee Valley near Glen Davis NSW. Glen Davis is a village in the Lithgow area, just a stone's throw from Sydney (about a 2 hour drive)

LEON HANSON - Capertee Cliffs

Prolific artist who is an Australian "listed" artist who passed in 2011.

The artist has not dated this work but we clearly remember purchasing this painting back in the late 1970's, it left quite a hole in our pockets at the time!

Original Oil on board

Signed in the bottom right  corner (Brown colouring)

I have attempted to enlarge this section of the artwork in this area so you can see his signature, it is quite indistinct in the painting as the colouring is very similar to the surrounding earth.

The frame is special, in fact a well chosen frame can be a great asset to any artwork, nothing worse than a great work of art being framed in something drab and uninspiring!

This frame is wooden, with plaster moulding at the four corners, blue/grey wash with extensive gold gilding.

We always liked this frame in particular, it fits well with the ageless feel of the Australian scenery depicted but not often could we afford such a frame!

This artwork is HEAVY and quite LARGE - make sure you allow plenty of wall space for this one!

Artwork measurements: 610mm wide x 500mm high

Frame measurements:  765mm wide x 665mm high

Hanging weight: 5Kg

CONDITION:

Artwork is clean*

*Since taking down from the wall a few years back, we placed this artwork in our storage unit wrapped in butchers paper (dust protection). After inspection when we removed it from storage, the artwork looks very good - clean but quite possibly it would respond well to a PROFESSIONAL cleanup/restoration.

NO issues with flaking or artwork damage observed

NO issues with artwork discolouration

FRAME:

Yes light knocks occurred while in the storage and it looks like the high humidity affected some of the moulding, creating light "cracking" to the plaster. Both of these issues really don't detract from the artwork, in fact they tend to enhance that "classic old" look but if restoration was desired, I am sure a professional picture framer could bring the frame back to A1 condition.

Don't forget, you will need a decent hanging arrangement (due to the weight), plenty of wall space with good natural lighting and if possible, a controlled environment such as air-conditioning to keep the humidity and ambient air temperature constant.

Sounds like a lot of fuss? If you respect your artwork, these are things you should consider.

The original nylon hanging cord has been left in place on the rear.
