AUTO Stepdown Transformer

240V to 110V

Maximum output current 20A = approximately 2000W

Voltage meter display

Fuse

Neon indicator lamp on the output

This beauty is part of some gear I was using but now I have changed everything to variac control so this stepdown needs to find a new home.

***Very important to note***

This is an AUTO TRANSFORMER - one winding for the primary with a tap for the secondary = no electrical isolation between the primary and secondary.

If you do not understand the difference between an auto transformer and a true isolating transformer - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PUT THIS TOGETHER AND USE IT!

Use this transformer to test 110V equipment (must be designed for our 50Hz operation though) or integrate into equipment where 110V AC at high current is required.

I am supplying all the electrical components, you must find a heavy duty metal case to suit and then mount everything.

All components have been fully tested before dismantling and are working perfectly - just a bit aged.

You will get

240V - 110V Heavy duty auto transformer

Iron laminated with spring tensioners to reduce lamination noise when under high loads

Fly leads (enamelled) which are clearly labelled - input & output

Additionally, this transformer has an isolated winding for the AC Voltage meter (0-6V AC input) which indicates
" 240V in - 110V out " with 4V AC across the meter.

Neon lamp is wired across the output

Panel mounting fuseholder on the input (Active) - fuse still inside!

Checked for insulation resistance between the windings and the core and all is good - no problems there.

The AC Voltmeter is open framed i.e no back so this means the meter must be handled very delicately - it works great but the winding wires could easily be damaged in handling - I have protected the meter assembly in bubblewrap.

The transformer is HEAVY - weighing in at around 12Kg, you must use good solid case construction for this to be mounted securely.

SPECIFIC TRANSFORMER DIMENSIONAL INFORMATION (for those who might be considering a rewind undertaking)

Transformer external dimensions:

210mm wide x 160mm high x 120mm thick

Transformer laminated iron core dimensions:

180mm wide x 150mm high x 63mm thick

Centre former (around which the windings are wound) measures 60mm wide

Gap between this central former and the inside edge of the E is 28mm on each side (total internal width is 116mm) WHEN THERE ARE NO WINDINGS.

The existing winding increases the central former "real estate taken" from 60mm to 100mm so there is no much space on each side of this central former for any additional windings.

If it was envisaged to overlay a new secondary winding over the existing primary winding, there is only 8 - 9mm on each side presently (with the existing winding in place)

4x corner mounting holes (was bolt mounted in my other gear)

Great AC stepdown project kit for someone who needs a decent supply of 110V single phase.

If you are not familiar with working around 240V equipment, especially if you are not familiar with the pro's and con's of auto transformers - find a licensed electrician who might put it together for you.
