HISTORY:

Well, what can I say? These are your "Joe Average" loudspeakers, good sound but not great and intended for those who just want listenable loudspeakers but no need for exceptional (with a corresponding high price tag) "detailed" loudspeakers.

These were used by our daughter, her ears found these suited her musical tastes fine but she has now moved onto one of those smart speaker systems - lousy sound (in my opinion) but hey! you can tell it what to play!

You can shout all you like at these Sony's and they will just sit there dumbfounded - I like that.

So, these loudspeakers are great for the kids room or a reasonably low key party (small to medium area) but not for the connoisseur of audio

SONY - Stereo Loudspeaker (2)

Circa 1990's

MODEL: SS-D55AV

DESIGN: Bass reflex, single front ported

3 Way

Maximum power 100W RMS each loudspeaker (6 Ohm)

Frequency response (3dB points): 40Hz ~ 20kHz

Impedance: 6 Ohms

1x 22cm (about 8.5") Woofer/Driver to look after the mid ~ low range frequencies

1x 6.5cm (about 2.5") Driver/Tweeter to help out the Woofer/Driver with the mid's and start taking on some of the high frequencies

1x 6.5cm Tweeter to handle the high frequencies

I had a look at getting inside the cabinet and its just all too hard! It is certainly well sealed and I decided to leave it alone, I do not know the model of speakers that SONY used in these loudspeakers

Sensitivity: 91dB/Wm

Terminals at the rear are the "push and insert wire" type

DIMENSIONS (Each cabinet)

I would call these Midi bookshelf speakers, larger than many bookshelf systems but too small for floor standing although if the listening room was small and didn't have a "bookshelf" area, then floor standing or raised to "ear level" somehow may be a good thing.

270mm Width x 455mm Height x 285mm Deep

WEIGHT (Each cabinet)

Just over 6Kg

This is quite lightweight for a loudspeaker but this makes the job of moving them around when a party is "happening" an easy thing to do

COSMETIC CONDITION:

CLEAN

Very good condition

Grille cloths are both undamaged, not even a small hole!

Cabinets are in very good condition, joints are tight and the black ash like veneer is secure at the joints and with practically no marks or scratches - anywhere ...

BUT

On the underneath the cabinets of both speakers they do have some surface scratches resulting from being placed on furniture and moving them around - this applies ONLY to the underside.

Both of the driver/woofer cones and dust covers are perfect, no nicks, no cuts and no damage from some idiot pushing their finger into the dust cover! Same goes for the "little ones"which look to be paper cones. Those grills over the smaller speakers are mesh METAL, not plastic - nice!

TESTING:

As outlined above, these were in casual use for a number of years and last week I connected to my test NAD system and played some vinyl and CD's of various genres.

The sound is good although with some music it does get a bit "muddled". I liked the bass response and the tweeters really do their job too - the sound of snares and hi-hats actually were not too bad.

I did notice that these like to be "pushed" a bit - they sound "better" when pumped with audio. It's as though at very low levels of sound the speakers are sleeping on the job but when the volume is wound up a bit, they come alive. This gives that extra bit of dynamic range e.g listening to some experimental music this evening and the music is quietly playing along and then bursts of some synth playing fire up and I just about jumped out of my skin - the speakers had no trouble, I was just surprised at the sudden jump in level.

The speakers seemed to really like that "synth sound" with throbbing pumped bass lines and good strong mids/highs - probably the market that SONY had in mind originally.

A week of continuous use was enough for me (tired ears) and I am now going back to my Aaron's and have packed these SONY's away ready for a new owner, either for pickup at Rooty Hill (PREPAID orders only and with an appointment) OR I will ship these nice and safely either by courier or Australia Post at their current rates (cost depends upon where they are being delivered to in Australia)

HERE IS A NICE SHORT AUDIO/VIDEO CLIP DEMONSTRATING ANOTHER PERSONS LOUDSPEAKERS

(Love the LENCO turntable! One of the best around)
