Woods Soup Tureen
Cream background
Light brown simple line near the bowl base
The same light brown is used on the bowl lip for the leaf decoration and around the lime green border.
The lid on the other hand has simple line work but is NOT light brown but in fact gold gilding
We actually suspect the lid is NOT originally part of the tureen - although it does fit perfectly and both the lid and bowl do look well together, they do not have quite the same style of decoration.
Another big clue, there is no "cut out" for the soup ladle
Measures 21cm (8 inches) inside bowl diameter - 6.5cm (2.5 inches) deep
BOWL CONDITION:
NO cracks
A couple of very small fleabites to the underneath of the bowl
A couple of very light marks to the inside of the bowl
Extremely slight/light crazing in just one area of the bowl (inside) only noticeable because we use "wet testing" to check for crazing or general glaze degradation. To the naked eye, it is unlikely this crazing could be seen.
LID CONDITION:
NO cracks
NO crazing at all
3 small marks to the underside of the lid and one area with light discolouration - these "marks" are all on the underneath of the lid.
Printed on the base:
WOODS IVORY WARE (script)
Crown
ENGLAND
5X 2898
Wood's produced mainly teaware, tableware, fancy earthenware and hotelware and "Ivory Ware" was one of the trade names they used for their Ivorine China.
This pottery mark has been identified as used by Woods circa 1930
Please note though, we strongly suspect the lid is a "ring-in" and not originally part of the tureen.
