Royal Doulton extensively was inspired and used designs relating to children's nursery rhymes. The Nursery Rhyme series was introduced in 1903 and used artwork based on paintings by the artist Savage Cooper and the series was the prerunner to the well known Bunnykins range.

It is said that the first Royal Doulton Nursery Rhymes earthenware were ordered by Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII for their grand-children.

ROYAL DOULTON - Cereal Bowl

Cream base earthenware

Artwork is transferware

Story depicted (Two nursery rhymes gathered together)

Simple Simon

The story goes something like this ...

Simple Simon met a Pieman going to the fair.

Says Simple Simon to the Pieman "let me taste your ware"

Says the Pieman to Simple Simon: "shew me first your penny"

Says Simple Simon to the Pieman: "Indeed I have not any."

Peter Piper

To the left is Peter Piper, picking a peck of pickled peppers, ...remember the tongue twister

A peck of pickled peppers, Peter Piper picked

If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers

Where's the peck of pickled peppers, Peter Piper picked

(say it as fast as you can)

Measurements: 150mm diameter x 50mm high

Scalloped top edge

BACKSTAMP MARKINGS:

(Black Printed Royal Doulton Graphic, Lion on top of the crown etc)

MADE IN ENGLAND

12 (to the right of the main graphic)

ROYAL DOULTON

ENGLAND

D 5187

(Heavily pressed into the clay)

8 88

This printed backstamp was used from 1932 onwards and the D 5187 identifies the Nursery Rhyme series around 1937

The 12 also is an indication of the manufacture year, adding the standard 27 years to this and you end up with 1939 so I would prefer to say this bowl was created somewhere between 1932 ~ 1939
