Johnson Brothers was founded in 1883 by Frederick and Alfred Johnson, two grandsons of the founders of the renowned English pottery, J. & G. Meakin, Eventually their manufacturing moved offshore to China around 2003

The company was a major supplier of tablewares, and this design was known as the Dawn series which was introduced in the 1920's and production continued through until the late 1960's

By the mid 1940's Johnson Brothers was one of the world's largest manufacturers of earthenware and ironstone china products. By this time their products were well known for quality, hardiness and reasonable pricing.

JOHNSON BROTHERS - Teapot - pourer ONLY

Circa 1950's ~ 1960's (Based on the design and backstamp MADE IN ENGLAND - not just the single word ENGLAND)

Opaque earthenware, meaning you cannot see through the pourer when held to the light.

Design: Dawn Series

Colour: Golden Dawn ***

*** To be truthful, it looks more like Lemon Dawn (for which I can find no references!) the Yellow is more Lemon-like than Golden

All over colouring with no decoration at all

No features to specifically point out except the design has a very "smooth symetrical" look and looking inside you can see the 'tea leaf' filter, 7x holes around the spout area to reduce the number of tea-leaves that drop into your cup!

Dimensions:

Spout to Handle 210mm

Base to Spout 195mm

110mm Wide

Weight: 600g

BACKSTAMP DETAILS:

This is the only piece of our 'Dawn' teaset that does have the complete backstamp,

Printed (Green)onto the base underside...

(Undeciphered letter) (Crown Graphic) (Undeciphered letter)

JOHNSON BROS

MADE IN

ENGLAND

NO artists marks at all (not surprising as there is no decorative work!)

Normally with Johnson Brothers ceramics they can be fairly accurately dated based on the letters next to the crown graphic but in this case I cannot make out what those letters are but the basic design of the backstamp places this clearly in the period 1950's ~ 1960's

COSMETIC CONDITION:

Alas! Whilst washing the teapot, the lid was dropped and self destructed! We do not have another lid so this teapot is supplied WITHOUT THE LID

Clean

NO damage to the teapot in all respects:

NO cracks

NO chips

NO crazing observed

NO discolouring

I can see a couple of very light (and I mean very light) rub marks on the side of the handle from normal use - these are very slight and of no concern (at least to us they weren't)
